thermoregulation

Why is Thermoregulation Important in Neonates?

Newborns, particularly preterm and low birth weight infants, have a limited capacity to regulate their body temperature. This is due to several factors including a large surface area to body weight ratio, thin skin, limited subcutaneous fat, and immature metabolic mechanisms. Maintaining a stable body temperature is essential for preventing hypothermia and hyperthermia, both of which can lead to severe complications or even death.
