Embryonic Stage: During this period, the cartilage models of bones form. Fetal Stage: The cartilage models begin to ossify, or turn into bone, starting from the center and progressing towards the ends. Childhood: Significant growth occurs, with bones lengthening and widening. Adolescence: The growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, close as the bones reach their final size and shape.
