Barbiturates are used in neonates primarily for seizure control and as part of hypothermia therapy in cases of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). They may also be used as sedatives in some cases where other medications are not suitable. The therapeutic goals are to stabilize the neonate, reduce metabolic demand, and prevent further neurological injury.
