What Measures are Taken to Prevent Transfusion-Related Complications?
Several measures are in place to prevent complications in pediatric transfusions:
Leukoreduction: Removing white blood cells from donated blood to reduce the risk of febrile reactions and CMV transmission. Irradiation: Treating the blood with radiation to prevent GVHD, particularly in immunocompromised children. Washing Red Blood Cells: Removing plasma proteins to reduce the risk of allergic reactions. Use of Fresh Blood: Using blood that is less than 7 days old for neonates to minimize the risk of hyperkalemia and other complications.
