The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is a public health initiative launched in 1988 to eradicate polio worldwide. It is spearheaded by national governments, the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and UNICEF. The initiative aims to eliminate the transmission of all poliovirus strains and to certify the world as polio-free.
