There are two main types of polio vaccines used in the GPEI:
Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV): Administered orally, it contains weakened forms of the poliovirus and is highly effective in inducing immunity in the gut, where the virus multiplies. Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV): Administered via injection, it contains inactivated (killed) virus and is effective in inducing systemic immunity.
Both vaccines are used in different settings to maximize immunization coverage and efficacy.
