Stargardt disease is caused by mutations in the ABCA4 gene. This gene is responsible for producing a protein that helps remove toxic substances from the photoreceptor cells in the retina. When the gene is mutated, these toxins accumulate, leading to the death of photoreceptor cells and subsequent vision loss.
