What are the Treatment Options for Neonatal Reflux?
Treatment for neonatal reflux depends on the severity of the condition. Mild cases often resolve on their own as the infant's digestive system matures. However, for more severe cases, interventions may include:
- Feeding Modifications: Smaller, more frequent feedings, and thickening feedings with rice cereal. - Positioning: Keeping the baby upright for 20-30 minutes after feedings and elevating the head of the crib. - Medications: Antacids, H2 blockers, or proton pump inhibitors may be prescribed to reduce acid production. - Surgical Intervention: In rare and severe cases, a surgical procedure called fundoplication may be considered.
