There are numerous causes of neonatal cholestasis, which can be broadly classified into two categories: intrahepatic and extrahepatic.
- Intrahepatic causes: These include genetic disorders such as Alagille syndrome, progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), and metabolic disorders like galactosemia and tyrosinemia. - Extrahepatic causes: These are often structural abnormalities such as biliary atresia and choledochal cysts.
Infections like cytomegalovirus (CMV) and sepsis can also contribute to the development of cholestasis in neonates.
