Premature lungs lack sufficient surfactant, a substance that helps keep the air sacs in the lungs open. Without enough surfactant, the air sacs collapse, making it difficult for the infant to breathe. This condition is known as Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) and is a common issue among preterm infants.
