long acting reversible contraceptives (larcs)

What Types of LARCs are Available?

There are primarily two types of LARCs available:
1. Intrauterine Devices (IUDs): These are T-shaped devices inserted into the uterus. There are two main types: hormonal IUDs (like Mirena and Kyleena) and copper IUDs (like ParaGard). Hormonal IUDs release small amounts of progestin, while copper IUDs use copper to prevent pregnancy.
2. Subdermal Implants: These are small rods inserted under the skin of the upper arm. The most commonly used implant is Nexplanon, which releases the hormone etonogestrel to prevent pregnancy.
