The exact cause of optic gliomas is not well understood. However, a significant proportion of cases are associated with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a genetic disorder that predisposes patients to various types of tumors. Approximately 15-20% of children with NF1 will develop an optic glioma.
