What Are the Common Types of Gait Abnormalities in Children?
Certain gait abnormalities are relatively common in children and often resolve with time. Some include:
Toe Walking: Walking on the toes or balls of the feet is common in toddlers. Persistent toe walking beyond age 3 may require evaluation. Intoeing: Often called "pigeon-toed," where the toes point inward. It can originate from the foot, tibia, or femur. Out-toeing: The opposite of intoeing, where toes point outward. It is less common and sometimes requires intervention. Limping: Can be due to pain, weakness, or structural abnormalities and should be evaluated if persistent.
