Small veins, also known as venules, are tiny blood vessels that connect capillaries to larger veins. In newborns, these veins are responsible for returning deoxygenated blood from the tissues back to the heart. Due to their small size and delicate structure, they can be prone to various complications, especially in preterm babies.
