Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that can develop after an infection with group A Streptococcus bacteria. When the bodyâs immune system responds to the infection, it can sometimes attack healthy tissues, including the heart, joints, skin, and brain. This immune response can cause inflammation and scarring of the heart valves, which is known as rheumatic heart disease.
