e. coli

How does E. coli infect neonates?

Neonates can acquire E. coli infections through several routes. Vertical transmission is a common pathway, where the bacteria are passed from mother to infant during childbirth. This can occur if the mother has a urinary tract infection or colonization of E. coli in the vaginal flora. Horizontal transmission can occur in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) due to contaminated medical equipment or poor hand hygiene.
