Brain development in children occurs in stages, starting from the prenatal period and continuing into early adulthood. Neural connections form rapidly in the first few years of life, a phase known as synaptogenesis. The brain also undergoes periods of pruning, where unused neural connections are eliminated to improve efficiency. Critical periods exist for the development of various functions like language and vision.
