Why are Immunosuppressive Medications Used in Neonates?
Neonates may require immunosuppressive therapy for various conditions. For instance, infants born with congenital immunodeficiencies, autoimmune disorders, or those undergoing organ transplantation may need these medications. Some of the common conditions include:
- Neonatal Lupus: This autoimmune disorder can cause severe complications such as heart block and liver dysfunction. - Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH): A rare but life-threatening condition where the body's immune system becomes overactive. - Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID): Infants with this condition require bone marrow transplants and immunosuppressive medications to prevent graft rejection.
