Tracheal aspirates should be considered when a child exhibits symptoms of a lower respiratory tract infection, such as fever, increased respiratory effort, or changes in respiratory secretions. They are also warranted in cases of persistent lung infiltrates on imaging, or when there is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing treatment.
