What Methods Are Used for Newborn Hearing Screening?
There are two primary methods used for newborn hearing screening:
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE): This test measures sound waves produced in the inner ear. A tiny probe is placed in the baby's ear, and sounds are played. The probe measures the ear's response to these sounds. Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR): This test measures how the hearing nerve responds to sound. Electrodes are placed on the baby's head, and sounds are played through earphones. The electrodes measure the brain's response to these sounds.
