The umbilical artery is a critical vessel in fetal circulation. Originating from the internal iliac arteries, these paired arteries transport deoxygenated blood from the fetus to the placenta. The placenta, in turn, facilitates the exchange of waste products and carbon dioxide for oxygen and nutrients from the maternal blood supply.
