What is the Prognosis for Infants with Biliary Atresia?
Early detection and prompt surgical intervention are key to improving outcomes. Without treatment, biliary atresia is fatal, usually by age 2. With the Kasai procedure, around 80% of children achieve some bile drainage, but only about 25-50% will have long-term liver function without requiring a liver transplant. Advances in pediatric liver transplantation have significantly improved survival rates and quality of life for affected children.
