If a mother is known to be hepatitis B positive, additional steps are necessary to protect the newborn. The infant should receive the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine and a dose of hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) within 12 hours of birth. This combination provides immediate and long-term protection against the virus. The infant should then complete the standard vaccination series.
