What Conditions Necessitate Plasma Transfusions in Neonates?
Several neonatal disorders may require plasma transfusions:
Neonatal sepsis: Infections can disrupt the balance of proteins in the blood, necessitating plasma transfusions to support immune function. Coagulopathies: Conditions like Hemophilia or Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) require plasma to replace clotting factors. Severe liver disease: The liver produces many of the blood's proteins, and liver dysfunction can necessitate plasma transfusions. Exchange transfusions: In cases of severe jaundice or Rh incompatibility, plasma may be included in exchange transfusions to stabilize the infant's blood composition.
