The main cause of NRDS is the inadequate production of surfactant, a substance that helps reduce surface tension in the lungs, thereby preventing the collapse of alveoli. This is particularly common in preterm infants born before 37 weeks of gestation. Other factors may include maternal diabetes, multiple pregnancies, and a history of NRDS in siblings.
