What are the Key Stages of Sexual Differentiation?
The differentiation process can be divided into several key stages:
Genetic Determination: Occurs at fertilization when the sperm and egg combine to form either an XX or XY embryo. Gonadal Differentiation: Around the 6th week of gestation, the undifferentiated gonads begin to develop into either testes or ovaries. Hormonal Influence: The testes start producing male hormones (androgens) around the 8th week, influencing the development of male characteristics. In the absence of these hormones, female characteristics develop. Development of Internal and External Genitalia: Guided by the presence or absence of specific hormones, the internal and external genitalia continue to develop, completing the process by around the 12th week of gestation.
