What are the Consequences of Untreated Asynchrony?
If asynchrony remains unaddressed, it can lead to several adverse outcomes:
- Increased Work of Breathing: The infant may expend more energy trying to breathe against the ventilator. - Hypoxemia and Hypercapnia: Inadequate gas exchange can result in low oxygen and high carbon dioxide levels. - Chronic Lung Disease: Prolonged asynchrony can contribute to conditions like BPD. - Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury (VILI): Improper ventilation strategies can cause damage to the delicate lung tissues.
