What are tamper-resistant receptacles (TRRs) and how do they work?
Tamper-resistant receptacles (TRRs) are specially designed electrical outlets that prevent children from inserting foreign objects into the slots. TRRs have built-in spring-loaded shutters that close off the contact openings. These shutters remain closed unless a plug with two or three prongs is inserted simultaneously, which means that a child’s attempt to insert a single object will not open the shutters. TRRs are effective in preventing electrical injuries and are now required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) in new and renovated homes.
