In addition to placing the infant on their back to sleep, parents and caregivers should follow these safe sleep practices:
Use a firm sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet. Keep soft bedding, pillows, and toys out of the crib to reduce the risk of suffocation. Share a room with the infant, but not the same bed, to reduce the risk of sleep-related deaths. Avoid overheating by dressing the infant appropriately for the environment and not covering their heads. Consider offering a pacifier at nap time and bedtime, as it has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS.
