Natural Killer (NK) cells are a type of lymphocyte that play a critical role in the early immune response against viral infections and tumors. Unlike other immune cells, NK cells do not require prior sensitization to recognize and destroy infected or malignant cells. They are a part of the innate immune system and are essential for controlling infections in neonates whose adaptive immune system is still developing.
