The MSLT usually follows an overnight polysomnography (PSG), which records sleep patterns, oxygen levels, and other physiological data. During the MSLT, the child is given multiple opportunities to nap in a quiet, dark room at two-hour intervals throughout the day. Each nap opportunity lasts about 20 minutes, and the test typically includes five such opportunities. The primary measurement is the sleep latency, or the time it takes for the child to fall asleep.
