Ocular motility testing involves several steps to assess the full range of eye movements:
History Taking: The clinician will ask about any symptoms, family history of eye disorders, and any previous treatments or surgeries. Inspection: The clinician observes the eyes at rest to check for any obvious misalignment or ptosis (drooping of the eyelid). Cover-Uncover Test: This test helps to identify any latent strabismus (phoria) by covering one eye and then uncovering it to see if there is any movement as the eye takes up fixation. Alternate Cover Test: This test involves alternately covering each eye to disrupt binocular vision and detect any manifest strabismus (tropia). Hirschberg Test: A light is shone into the child's eyes, and the reflection on the cornea is observed to check for alignment. Ocular Movements: The clinician directs the child to follow a target in different directions to assess the range and quality of eye movements.
