Hypoallergenic formulas are made through a process called hydrolysis. During hydrolysis, long protein chains are broken down into smaller pieces, making them easier for the infant's digestive system to process and less likely to be recognized by the immune system as allergens. Some formulas also undergo additional processing to remove lactose, making them suitable for infants with lactose intolerance.
