ERCP is a complex procedure that involves the following steps:
The child is placed under general anesthesia to ensure they remain still and pain-free during the procedure. A flexible endoscope is inserted through the mouth, passing through the esophagus and stomach to reach the duodenum. A contrast dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts via a catheter passed through the endoscope. X-ray images are taken to visualize the ducts and identify any abnormalities. Depending on the findings, therapeutic interventions like stone removal, stent placement, or dilation of strictures may be performed.
