Neonates can acquire CNS infections through various routes:
- Vertical transmission: Pathogens are transmitted from the mother to the baby during pregnancy, labor, or delivery. For example, HSV can be transmitted during vaginal delivery. - Horizontal transmission: Infection can occur postnatally through direct contact, contaminated medical equipment, or through the bloodstream.
