There are several ways parents and caregivers can reduce the risk of SIDS:
1. Back to Sleep Always place babies on their backs to sleep, for naps and at night. This is the most effective way to reduce the risk of SIDS.
2. Use a Firm Sleep Surface Use a firm mattress covered by a fitted sheet. Avoid soft bedding, pillows, blankets, and bumper pads in the crib.
3. Share a Room, Not a Bed Keep the baby's sleep area in the same room where you sleep for at least the first 6 months. However, the baby should sleep in a separate crib or bassinet.
4. Avoid Overheating Dress the baby in appropriate sleep clothing, and keep the room at a comfortable temperature. Avoid heavy blankets and over-bundling.
5. Breastfeeding Breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of SIDS. If possible, exclusively breastfeed for the first six months.
6. Immunizations Ensure the baby receives all recommended vaccinations. Immunizations have been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS by 50%.
