Diagnosis of suprasternal retractions is primarily clinical. A healthcare provider will observe the child’s chest and neck during breathing. Key observations include:
- Visible indentations above the sternum. - Rapid or labored breathing. - Use of accessory muscles in the neck and chest. - Associated symptoms such as cyanosis, tachypnea, or nasal flaring.
Additionally, the physician may order a chest X-ray, blood tests, or a pulse oximetry to evaluate the underlying cause of respiratory distress.
