The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) provides specific guidelines to reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related deaths:
Place infants on their backs for every sleep, including naps. Use a firm sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet. Keep soft objects and loose bedding out of the crib. This includes pillows, quilts, comforters, and stuffed animals. Share a room with the infant, but not the same sleeping surface, for at least the first six months. Consider offering a pacifier at nap time and bedtime.
