Applying the R.I.C.E. method involves four main steps:
Rest Encourage the child to rest the injured area to prevent further injury. Limiting movement helps reduce pain and swelling. Instruct the child to avoid putting weight on the injured part.
Ice Apply an ice pack to the injured area for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours during the first 48 hours. Ice helps reduce inflammation and numbs the pain. Ensure to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to prevent skin damage.
Compression Use an elastic bandage to compress the injured area. This helps minimize swelling and provides support. Make sure the compression is snug but not too tight, as it should not impede blood flow.
Elevation Keep the injured area elevated above the heart level as much as possible. Elevation helps reduce swelling by allowing fluids to drain away from the injured site.
